EARTH FRIENDLY EATS

Our Sustainability Promise:

We commit to being responsible stewards, actively engaging our students, guests, and staff in resource conservation, waste reduction, sustainability practices, and environmental justice.

On our menus, you will find this blue “Earth Friendly” symbol for items that are considered sustainable, and certified in any of the below categories.

Colorado Local  

  • Local food is more sustainable because of its reduced transportation needs, eliminating most of the emissions that planes, trains, and trucks produce to get food from all over the world to our plates.  
  • Local food also supports the local economy, supporting small farms and business owners who compete with national or international food companies.  
  • Some examples you can find across CSU Housing & Dining Services:  
    • Flour tortillas in Comida at The Foundry
    • Gibb’s Bagels in Ram’s Horn & Durrell Marketplaces
    • Dazbog Coffee in all dining centers
    • Hazel Dell Mushrooms in dining centers

Fair Trade or Equal Exchange 

  • Fair Trade or Equal Exchange food is verified to have been made and distributed under sustainable and ethical trade, including environmental sustainability, and non-exploitative labor practices.

    • Keen One Organic Quinoa Cups
    • Sambazon Sorbet Berry Acai To Go
    • Guayaki Yerba Mate
    • Teatulia

USDA Organic 

  • USDA-certified organic food is grown or produced in an ecologically-sound manner. This includes little to no use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or additives, and promoting practices that allow for soil health and animal wellbeing.

    • Bhakti Chai Concentrate

Aquaculture Stewardship Council, Best Aquaculture Practices,  or Marine Stewardship Council 

  • Foods certified by the above organizations follow protocol and standards of sustainable farmed and harvested seafood.  
  • These organizations strive to prevent overfishing, marine habitat destruction, and excess pollution runoff from seafood farms.

Rainforest Alliance 

  • Rainforest Alliance certification ensures that food items were grown sustainably, including deforestation prevention, livable wage guarantee, and preserving the rights of communities living in rural areas.

Certified Grassfed or Animal Welfare Certified 

  • Grass-fed or Animal Welfare certified food ensures that animals were provided high-quality, non-grain feed, as this restores a natural nutrient cycle between farmed animals and their ecosystems.
